Larimar is a rare gemstone found only in an inaccessible region of the Dominican Republic overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The sky blue stone's name was coined by a Dominican, Miguel Méndez, who combined his daughter's name Larissa, with mar, the Spanish word for sea. Obsidian is volcanic glass, considered a rock rather than a mineral. It is formed in the last stage of basaltic eruptions, when the silicas, left over after most other elements have been used up, are ejected and chilled at surface temperatures. Rainbow obsidian has a multicolored iridescence.
