Hematite is a metallic gray iron oxide mineral. Its name comes from the Greek word for blood, as it is sometimes red in its powder form.. Gem grade Hematite is found in Europe, Brazil & the USA. Obsidian is volcanic glass, considered a rock rather than a mineral. It is formed in the last stage of basaltic eruptions, when the silicas, left over after most other elements have been used up, are ejected and chilled at surface temperatures. Rainbow obsidian has a multicolored iridescence.
Moonstone is a variety of orthoclase, a feldspar. It often has a sky blue opalescent sheen, also called schiller or fire, making the stone look as if it is glowing. The sheen is created by thin layering of orthoclase with another mineral, albite. Moonstone was used in jewelry from 100 AD in Rome and even earlier in Asia.
